Djembes from the Ivory Coast are carved primarily out of Iroko {Milicia excelsa}, which is a harder wood with the same Janka Scale hardness as Red Oak. Giving them a very melodic tonal blend from bass to slap. These Djembes like the Ivory Coast Dunun are finished with the traditional Ivory Coast Chip Pattern, instead of the sanded smooth texture that look lathe turned.
- Used by many schools as well as independent facilitators, although due to the higher cost of these woods they are used more by Universities and High Schools.
- They have been the work horse of drum circles and performances for years, due to their superior tonal range.
- While Iroko doesn’t have the density of Lenke or Khadi to reach the highest and sharpest tones, it more than makes up for it by delivering a much better tonal range from the Bass all the way up till the slap. These qualities make it the best choice for accompaniment, when tuned up for top end it can still hold it’s own.
- We currently carry these drums in 2 sizes, Large and Medium
- All sizes are approximate, and carvings may vary.
- Large or Fullsize is ~ 12″-14″ heads x 24″-26″ Tall
- Medium ~ 11″ x 22″
